Today I am sharing a recipe for my super trendy Honey Bee Charcoal Latte! I made this a few months back (when I was still happily drinking coffee) and think it’s worth sharing in the winter months to help detox and as a quick pick-me-up! I also love the decaf version of this drink and think it might taste even better that way!
What makes this latte have detox powers? Let me tell you! The latte contains activated charcoal, which is amazing for binding to toxins in the body and helping to eliminating them. Now just so we are all on the same page, I am NOT talking about the type of charcoal used to grill food 😉 I am, however, talking about supplemental activated charcoal that can be used for a whole host of uses.
I LOVE activated charcoal for its teeth whitening properties – just use like you would toothpaste, brush for 2-5 minutes and rinse really well. Boom. Scary black teeth for a minute or two, but shiny and brighter when you’re done! Activated charcoal has awesome benefits when taken orally as well. Along with binding toxins, activated charcoal can help to improve digestion and reduce bloating. As with all supplements, make sure you talk with your doctor first before adding in anything new to your routine!
As with all everything, too much of a good thing is well… just too much. A warning here about activated charcoal – taking too much of it can cause discomfort and can make other medications ineffective since it has such a high absorption capacity. Do your research and do what feels right for you!
This latte contains about 560 mg of charcoal, one capsules worth and usually makes me feel pretty awesome! Always err on the cautious side though, you may want to start with a smaller dose and see how you feel since detoxing can be a very individual process. The other really cool component in this latte is the bee pollen!
I love bee pollen for its slightly sweet taste that reminds me of spring. Bee pollen is full of vitamins B1, B2 and B6 and contains magnesium, phosphorus and calcium! How cool. Bee pollen is considered a superfood, seeing as it is antibacterial and antiviral in nature and can help to reduce inflammation and stimulate the immune system – I think it’s pretty super!
Honey Bee Charcoal Latte
PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES
½ c. cold brew or drip coffee – regular caffeinated or decaf
½ c. coconut milk (or other non-dairy milk of your choice)
1 tbs. honey
1 tbs. collagen peptides, optional
1 capsule activated charcoal, contents only
1 tbs. bee pollen
- Combine coffee, coconut milk, honey and collagen in a small saucepan and heat until warmed through. Don’t let it boil!
- Take saucepan off heat and stir in activated charcoal until no lumps remain.
- Pour into a mug and top with bee pollen! Have fun watching the pollen dissolve!
- You can also pour the coffee over ice for an iced latte.
